Train Your Brain the Fun Way with StateChanger
I want to talk about a form of neurofeedback called StateChanger. It was one of the first systems I ever tried, and it remains one of the most engaging. What surprised me was how much fun it was. I could “play” a video game without touching a controller. My brain was doing the work while I simply watched the results unfold on the screen.
Neurofeedback can measure either electrical signals from the brain or changes in blood flow. StateChanger focuses on blood flow in the prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain that supports focus, decision-making, and flexibility in thinking. Small sensors are placed on your head to track this blood flow in real time. Once the game starts, you might find yourself piloting a rocket ship. As your brain shifts into the target state, the rocket climbs higher. You are not forcing it to happen. Your brain naturally adjusts as it receives feedback from the game.
While this post focuses on StateChanger, we also offer other types of neurofeedback. Some are game-based, while others involve watching a movie or show that subtly changes as your brain activity shifts. The goal is the same: helping your brain develop healthier, more adaptable patterns.
StateChanger is designed to build mental flexibility by training your brain to move smoothly between two important modes. Closed Focus is a state of deep concentration with increased blood flow to the prefrontal cortex. Open Focus is a more relaxed and meditative state with decreased blood flow. That flexibility can support migraine relief, sharper thinking, stress management, and performance under pressure.
The system is offered here in our office along with more sophisticated whole brain training. For those who want to extend their progress, StateChanger is simple enough to use at home. It can also be shared by the whole family, with each person’s scores, progress, and training history tracked individually. As a practical example, many people benefit from home sessions that last about twenty minutes, three times a week, over an eight-week period. Of course, it can be used again and again for peak performance and refreshers.
For me, the experience was both relaxing and absorbing. It feels like giving your brain a workout without the strain. That is the beauty of StateChanger. It is enjoyable in the moment, yet the benefits extend far beyond the session.
